Camper insurance for a camper van?

Everything about coverage, insurers & tips

Campervan insurance

Every camper must be insured, just like a normal car. You can do this with camper insurance. Whether you travel all year round or only on weekends, insurance is mandatory and wise. In this article, we explain step by step what is involved in insuring your camper van.

When can you insure your camper van?
Camper insurance takes effect as soon as the camper van is registered in your name. If you have chosen a Ventje, this is often at the time of delivery. A few weeks before that, you will receive an email from us with all the vehicle details and some information about taking out insurance. This way, everything is neatly arranged on the day you pick up your Ventje, and you can hit the road immediately with insurance.

What coverage can you choose?

  1. Third-party liability insurance (WA)
Third-party liability insurance is mandatory for every motorhome. This basic insurance only covers damage you cause to others with your motorhome, not damage to your own vehicle.
  2. Limited comprehensive insurance (WA Plus)
With this cover, you are also insured for damage that is beyond your control, such as fire, storm, hail, window damage or theft. This offers extra security, especially for motorhomes that are regularly parked outside.
  3. Comprehensive insurance (All-risk)
The most comprehensive cover. This also covers damage to your own camper van, even if you cause it yourself. Comprehensive cover is often chosen, especially if the Ventje is built on the basis of a new van.

Amount of the camper insurance premium.
The cover you choose largely determines the amount of the premium. Other factors also play a role, such as the number of claim-free years, the weight and year of manufacture of the motorhome, the catalogue value and the security features installed.

To determine the correct value, some insurers ask for purchase invoices, while others use a valuation by a loss adjuster..

What should you pay attention to when taking out camper van insurance?

  1. New value or current value
If you opt for comprehensive insurance, check carefully whether your Ventje is insured at new value or current value. With new value, you will be reimbursed for the purchase price (or a large part of it) in the event of total loss or theft. With current value, the insurer will only reimburse you for what the van is worth at that moment.
  2. Commuting
Not all insurers automatically cover commuting. If you also use your Ventje as your daily car, choose an insurance policy that allows this within the policy conditions.
  3. Breakdown assistance & foreign cover
Take a good look at the limits of the cover: some insurance policies only apply within the Netherlands, others throughout Europe. Also check whether breakdown assistance is included, or whether this has to be taken out separately.
  4. Contents and accessories
Check whether accessories such as solar panels, bike racks or awnings are also insured. Personal belongings (such as inventory and clothing) are not always covered as standard.
  5. Excess and alarm class
Finally, pay attention to the excess and the required anti-theft security. Some insurers require an approved alarm system for motorhomes above a certain value with comprehensive insurance.
